    Examining green production and its role within the competitive strategy of manufacturers

    Purpose: This paper reviews current literature and contributes a set of findings that capture the current state-of-the-art of the topic of green production. Design/methodology/approach: A literature review to capture, classify and summarize the main body of knowledge on green production and, translate this into a form that is readily accessible to researchers and practitioners in the more mainstream operations management community. Findings: The existing knowledge base is somewhat fragmented. This is a relatively unexplored topic within mainstream operations management research and one which could provide rich opportunities for further exploration. Originality/value: This paper sets out to review current literature, from a more conventional production operations perspective, and contributes a set of findings that capture the current state-of-the-art of this topic

    How capabilities in operations can influence green production:exploring the issues

    This research presents case material of companies within the UK that are attempting to be “Green” in their operations processes. We assess their aspirations by plotting capabilities through their supply networks under five key headings: Strategy; Production planning and procurement; In-house production; Logistics; and Human resource management within operations. We build upon the work of Azzone and Noci, 1998 and Azzone et al., 1997 and we present insights into companies whose commitment to Green Production ranges from “the company tries to delay the adoption of green programs” through to the company adopts a “radical approach to environmental issues.” In doing so we see how operations capabilities in a range of parameters can play a central and pivotal role in achieving some of the aspirations of Green Production within companies

    Servitization and enterprization in the construction industry:the case of a specialist subcontractor

    The current economic climate and a continuing fall in output of the UK construction industry has led to falling prices and margins particularly affecting those lower down in the supply chain such as specialist subcontractors. Coen Ltd. is one such company based in the West Midlands. Faced with a need to up its game it has embarked on a business improvement programme concentrating on better operational efficiency, building stronger client relationships and delivering value added services. Lacking appropriate internal resources Coen has joined with Aston Business School in a 2 year ERDF sponsored project to fulfil the transformation programme. The paper will describe the evolution of product- service offerings in construction and link this with the work being carried out at Coen with Aston and outline the anticipated outcomes

    Service business model and performance: Unpacking the complex relationship

Madrid, November 19-20, 2015.Servitization is a complex process for capturing value and hence the link between the implementation of services and firm performance is blurred. There have been different attempts to clarify the servitization-performance link quantitatively. The identification of non-linear relationship between the adoption of service business model and performance is academically sound but difficult for practitioners to use or apply in their businesses. In seeking to address this recent literature has introduced moderator variables to better assess this complex relationship. However, to the best of our knowledge there are no theoretical explanation of why the relationship between service implementation and firm performance is not linear. The present research contributes to this debate by exploring the differences between business model and strategy

    Product–service innovation and performance: the role of collaborative partnerships and R&D intensity

    Treating the intersection of the strategic partnerships, R&D intensity and servitization literatures, this study explores empirically whether external collaborative service development and provision, and industrial R&D intensity help to unpack the complex relation between product-service innovation (servitization) and performance. We argue that manufacturing firms implementing services benefit from strategic partnerships with Knowledge-Intensive Business Service (KIBS) firms. KIBS partnering provides opportunities for downsizing, externalising risks and sharing knowledge. Additionally, manufacturers in R&D-intensive industries are more likely to benefit from implementing service provision than firms in other sectors because of industry dynamics and reduced customer uncertainty. The study surveys executives in 370 large manufacturers worldwide.     Identifying (territorial) tensions in the servitization value chain

    Purpose: To understand the tensions that servitization activities create between actors within networks. Design/methodology/approach: Interviews were conducted with manufacturers, intermediaries and customers across a range of industrial sectors. Findings: Tensions relating to two key sets of capabilities are identified: in developing or acquiring (i) operant technical expertise and (ii) operand service infrastructure. The former tension concerns whom knowledge is co-created with and where expertise resides. The latter involves a territorial investment component; firms developing strategies to acquire greater access to, or ownership of, infrastructures closer to customers. Developing and acquiring these capabilities is a strategic decision on the part of managers of servitizing firms, in order to gain recognized power and control in a particular territory. Originality/value: This paper explores how firms’ servitization activities involve value appropriation (from the rest of the network), contrasting with the narrative norm for servitization: that it creates additional value. There is a need to understand the tensions that servitization activities create within networks. Some firms may be able to improve servitization performance through co-operation rather than competition, generating co-opetitive relationships. Others may need to become much more aggressive, if they are to take a greater share of the ‘value’ from the value chain

    OVERVIEW: Servitization is recognized as an opportunity for manufacturing firms to harvest additional value by accessing new sources of revenue and expanding their reach up and down the value chain. It is a network activity, as it involves not just the servitizing firm but actors across the firm’s ecosystem. Most studies argue that servitization creates value for all network actors. However, service innovation activities may also result in the firm appropriating value from other actors, creating tensions in the network. Those tensions can undermine servitization efforts and destroy value for all participants. To avoid this outcome, firms must anticipate and manage tensions to create cooperative relationships with value chain partners. Through a series of semi-structured interviews with key actors at servitizing firms and their customers and intermediaries, we identified specific types and sources of tensions in the servitization process and explored how they might be mitigated or managed

    The role of manufacturing and market managers in strategy development:lessons from three companies

    According to researchers and managers, there is a lack of agreement between marketing and manufacturing managers on critical strategic issues. However, most of the literature on the subject is anecdotal and little formal empirical research has been done. Three companies are investigated to study the extent of agreement/disagreement between manufacturing and marketing managers on strategy content and process. A novel method permits the study of agreement between the two different functional managers on the process of developing strategy. The findings consistently show that manufacturing managers operate under a wider range of strategic priorities than marketing managers, and that manufacturing managers participate less than marketing managers in the strategy development process. Further, both marketing and manufacturing managers show higher involvement in the strategy development process in the latter stages of the Hayes and Wheelwright four-stage model of manufacturing’s strategic role
